The first conversation is a chance to describe your situation, ask questions, and understand how an attorney could help. A little preparation can make that conversation more useful. You do not need a complete case file to get started.

Start with the dates and documents.
Let the attorney know about any upcoming hearings or notices with a deadline. Share the court or agency name and explain which documents you have received. If you are unsure what a document means, put it on your list of questions.
Ask the team which records they need and how to send them securely. You do not need to enter detailed case information in a website contact form.
Talk about what matters most to you.
Think about the practical concerns that brought you to this conversation. You may be worried about keeping your job, arranging transportation, caring for family, or understanding what comes next. Sharing those priorities helps the attorney understand the whole situation.
Understand the working relationship.
Before deciding on representation, ask who will handle your case, who will answer routine questions, and how updates will be provided. Ask what is included in the proposed fee, whether payment plans are available, and what additional work may require a separate agreement.
Five questions to bring with you
- What needs attention first, and what can wait?
- What additional information would help you evaluate my situation?
- What are the main steps you expect in this matter?
- Who will handle court appearances and keep me informed?
- What services and costs would the written agreement cover?
Before you end the conversation
Make sure you understand the next step, who is responsible for it, and when it should happen. If something is unclear, ask for an explanation in plain language. Keep a note of the contact person and any documents you have agreed to provide.
