This court petition is for an adult age 18 to under 21 whose San Luis Obispo conviction led to a suspension under Vehicle Code section 13202.5 for a listed offense committed between ages 13 and 20. The court may authorize a restricted license for a qualifying critical need, but the grant is discretionary. Even with a signed court order, the DMV must issue the restriction before you may drive under it. (Vehicle Code § 13202.5; San Luis Obispo court petition page.)
Confirm the conviction and critical need
Check the conviction against the offenses listed in section 13202.5(d), your age when the offense occurred, and the source of the suspension. The court’s page describes the adult 18–20 petition route. A separate DMV suspension or hold can still prevent issuance, so do not treat a court petition as clearing every license issue. (Vehicle Code § 13202.5.)
The form asks for proof in one of its listed critical-need categories: attending school, addressing a family illness, or essential employment needed for family support. Section 12513 addresses those criteria, including the role of public transportation. Use the applicable school, physician, or parent/guardian verification requested by the form, and explain the transportation need with supporting facts. (Vehicle Code § 12513; San Luis Obispo petition form.)
Submit the petition, then wait for DMV issuance
Complete items 1–7 and sign the declaration on page one. Obtain the school, physician, or parent/guardian signature in the applicable Part A, B, or C on page two, then submit both pages in person or by mail with a self-addressed stamped envelope. The petition form still contains language about a minor petitioner, but the court’s page expressly describes the route for adults age 18–20; follow the court’s adult instructions. The court returns its decision. If it grants the request, take the signed petition to the DMV and follow the DMV’s issuance process. A court signature alone is not permission to drive.
